what is the difference between Domain Registration and Web Hosting?

Domain registration and web hosting can be two of the most confusing elements when it comes to building a website. There are a lot of technical terms and jargon to wrap your head around, especially for those who are new to this field. In this article, we’ll break down what each of these two services actually are, and how they work together to make websites possible.

What Is a Domain Name?
Domain names are the unique string of numbers that identify websites on the internet. They are used in place of a site’s IP address because they are much easier to remember and are human-readable. Websites have a lot of different files and data that need to be stored somewhere online for people to access them. That’s where the domain hosting comes in.

A domain name registrar will connect your unique string of numbers to a web hosting server that will store the files for your website. Then, when someone types your domain name in their browser, the server will send the files back to them.

What Is a Web Hosting Service?
A web hosting service is the server or cloud where all of your website’s files will live. Think of it like the address for your house—the domain is the address, and the web hosting is the actual house where all of the files are stored. All websites on the internet need web hosting in order to be visible.

Many top domain name registrars also offer web hosting, as it is a great way to upsell their customers. If you are looking for both, be sure to shop around and look at the prices and features of each provider. If you are able to get your domain and web hosting from the same company, it can be very convenient, as all of your information will be located in one location and it can save you some money.

Should I Use the Same Company for my Domain Name and Hosting?
Having your domain name and web hosting registered with the same company is not necessary. In fact, it can be a good idea to separate the two services for a few reasons.

For example, if you choose to register your domain with a different provider than the company you will be hosting your website with, you will have to change your DNS settings at your web host in order to point your domain to the correct server where all of your website’s files are stored. This process is fairly easy to do, but can be an additional step for those who are attempting to build a site.

Additionally, using the same company for both domain registration and web hosting can lead to security issues down the road if not done correctly. Be sure to discuss this with your chosen domain registrar and web hosting provider before deciding what to do.
